PLAY SUMMARY OF PEG IN A RINGOnce the play opens, we see on the surface, a strong and powerful marriage system at the brink of disaster, as Iwe, representative of the old order in the traditional marriage system of his local village community in West Africa, fights hard to hold onto his authority in the household. The forces at play, militating against his authority, tend to arise from his own family as well as his own clan's men.Meanwhile, Mark, who is described as a “Been-to,” meaning someone who has been to, or lived in a Western country, is experiencing both a virtual and a literal breakdown in his marriage to an ‘Oyibo’ woman. He becomes an epitome of the new order indirectly, in a clash with the old traditional family system of that African community which it represents.At the same time, the struggle that ensues between these extraneous forces becomes analogous to a different new era in the history of the native African community that is being represented.Hitherto, this play, ‘Peg in a Ring’ leads us to an eye-opening awareness of two different cultures that exist alongside each other; the Western versus the traditional African, with the background taken from a local village of a West African community.Whether this new wind is a factor of the feminist movement, explosion of violence/sexual perversion through the Western world/media, general widespread decadence of social mores, an invitation to Christian living, or the breakdown of a native religious system, a devaluing of the hierarchical order of the family system in the rural West African village, or a seeming general undermining of the various cultures at play here, we are compelled to take an in-depth look at the human individual for what matters the most; True LOVE, Never yet discounting the Power of Forgiveness in the end.
